Extending the run time of a Dinotte AA bike light |

The nice thing about the DiNotte Pro Series Lights is that it uses standard NiMH rechargeable AA batteries which can be replaced at a moment’s notice or in an absolute emergency, alkaline batteries can be used for very short run times to get you home. The batteries are a universal standarsd and are commonly available. Rechargable NiMh spares are easy to carry. When one set of 4 batteries runs out is is easy to pop in four more and continue on your way. Easy but at the same time inconvenient. I found that if I connected multiple sets of 4AAs in parallel, I could extend the run time without having to stop, dig out 4 more AAs and resume my journey. With parts commonly available at Radio Shack, you can build additional battery packs that can be connected to provide continuous service limited only by the number of battery packs you want to carry along. I found the 3 battery packs coupled together would permit me about 6 hours of run time.
Here are some instructions for building your own
It helps if you have a VOM handy during assembly. All the parts are available at Radio Shack:
The 4AA holders have a "9V" connector terminal. You can join any number of battery holders by connecting then in parallel. Build the 'pigtails' by pairing all the red leads of the 9V Snap Connectors on one side of the butt connector with the black lead of a single 9V Snap Connector on the other side. Do the same with the black leads to the red The single connector end of the assembly connects to the existing light harness. The diagram below shows the assembly on the left of the vertical bar and the existing light harness on the right.
A single 4AA battery pack puts out 4.8v-5.6v. You can verify polarity with the VOM. Here is a photo and a link to a Dinotte/TerraCycle album on my website.
