Day 4: 2 August, 2001 PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, August 2, 2001 11:40AM
Destination: České Budějovice
Daily Cycle Distance: Bike 19 km (11.9 mi.)

At a little after 7AM, I went down for the hotel breakfast leaving Daniel to snooze. The breakfast ‘bufet‘ was filled with the Japanese tour group and another group from a walking tour. Most of the walking tour group were Americans. There were no available unoccupied tables. After asking, I joined a couple from New Hampshire. A stroll around town followed breakfast and after that, I retrieved Daniel and had another coffee while Daniel had his breakfast.
On the morning agenda was a trip to the train station to see if we could manage to get ourselves and bikes ~150mi. east to Zlin to visit Daniel M‘s family. As it turned out, all trains had to pass through Prague 100mi. north of here, then head ~200 miles east. Also, it would not be possible to ride in the same car as our bikes and the trip would take 10hrs. On the way back from the train station, we hit the ‘internetova kaverna‘ to catch up on e-mail.
Back to the main square for a little browsing and a strategy meeting over ‘pivo‘. Since Zlin seems to be out of reach, we will try to leave here on Saturday after a day trip to Czeske Krumlov tomorrow.
Since our change of plans has extended our stay at the Hotel Zvon we needed to reserve another night. The only thing available was a suite overlooking ‘Namesti Premysia Otakara II‘. At $90/night, it still seems cheap compared to US rates.

After lunch on the square, Daniel opted for a shower and I decided to take a bike tour of the city. I found a bike lane along the Vltavou and followed it North to Bavorovice the next village downstream. Round trip was about 19km.
For the rest of the afternoon, I went on a quest for my mythical Brass Bike Bell (Zvon in Czech and Das FahrradKlinger in German) and missing bolt for my SPDs. In shopping alone, I have now managed to successfully order in Czech, 2 scoops of ice cream (chocolate and pistachio) in a chocolate dipped cone. No brass bell, but an acceptable chrome plated one. I also replaced my missing SPD bolt with a complete SPD clone cleat replacement set for ~$7.50 (a third of the price that I would have paid in the US.)
