I awoke at 5:30AM after getting ~6 hrs. of sleep. Daniel is still snoring as I write this an hour later...
Our Pension is what I am coming to consider typical for the price range
(1400CSK ($36)) A ‘doppelzimmer mit zwei bedt und bad‘. The toilet paper has
not traveled far from the tree. The shower is a raised quarter circle
enclosed in the corner of the ‘bad‘.
(later...)
Since this Pension did not provide breakfast, We wandered
around the area looking for an open restaurant and even got turned down at
a nearby hotel because we were not paying guests. The hotel bar did supply
us with espresso.
After what passed for breakfast on our first day in the
Czech Republic, we began to assemble the bikes. On opening the case I
discovered that my front wheel had sustained a bent spoke. After an hour
or so we got the bikes together and I tested my bent spoke. It seemed to
be OK and the brakes works without the wheel rubbing. Daniel M.
showed up around 11AM and we all had lunch in a nearby restaurant. Daniel M commented that it was twice the price of what he was used to
paying (The meal for the three of us (including beer) came to 750Kc
(~$18).
After lunch, we loaded our gear into Daniel M‘s car (A
Skoda Felice - yes
Bob Simonds, I got a ride in a Skoda) and with the bikes on top, headed
south out of Prague to Tabor. Along the way, we stopped to visit Konopiste,
a hunting lodge (Palace really) of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand. While showing us around, Daniel M. recommended a Czech movie
‘My Sweet Little Village‘, shot in a nearby town. It is a movie about
life in the small village of Krecovice.
Tabor
XXXX
We ended the day in
Tabor where we found the Pension Malina to be a very
basic pension for 700Kc.(~$17.50). It did have a Shower in the room and a
third bed but we opted for the common facilities down the hall. Daniel M
suggested to Daniel K that he might try to discuss the room negotiations
with the Pension manager. He did quite well. I have admired (and envied)
Daniel‘s understanding of the Czech language. I really appreciate having
Daniel on the trip.
After settling in, we walked into the
old restored part of the city for a
tour and a meal. Daniel M showed me how to buy a phone card and how to use
a pay Phone to call Becky.
One of the things that I learned from Daniel M was about the Chestnut
trees in the square. They all have a disease that is affecting all the
Chestnut trees in Europe like the one that killed all the Chestnut trees
in America.
Not long after Daniel M left, Daniel K and I took a nap. Around 10PM that
evening as we were ready to catch up on some serious sleep, we discovered that our room window was adjacent to the street light
mounted on the exterior of the building.

I notice that the 220 adapter is working well and so is Jim Turley‘s AA
battery adapter. Keeping the Cassiopeia going
that I use to keep this journal doesn‘t appear that it will be the
problem that it was last year.
| This year I would like to try to capture some of the
feelings that I experience during this trip. You may see others
captured here in boxes similar to this one. |
This morning as Daniel and I were wandering around
looking for breakfast, I commented on the odors of the city. There seems to
be cleaner air here in Prague. It smells tangy and surprisingly free of
diesel fumes. Most housing places in the city are located around a common
courtyard.
While walking around Tabor this afternoon, I was looking at the old town centrum
and realized that it all was very much like towns I visited last year. Is
this trip going to be a repeat of last year? |
Like the first few days of last year‘s trip, I begin this trip with
lots of apprehension:
Is my bike going to make it?
Will we have trouble getting back to Prague?
We are in an area with lots of tourists. Is traffic going to be a problem?
Are these hills going to be to tough?
As I lie here and worry, Daniel is in the next bed snoring... |
