Day -1: 27 July, 2000 PDF Print E-mail

Destination:     Dulles Airport, Washington, D.C.
Daily Cycle Distance:     0 km.

My decision to stay overnight at the Houston Marriott worked out well. (It could have been cheaper but that’s the going rate in the US for clean sheets.) I parked the car at remote lot and took shuttle back to airport. The hotel shuttle took me to the terminal this morning. When checking in, Continental would not (could not) come up with an excess baggage fee for a bike on Austrian Air. They charged me $45 for their leg of my flight and informed me that I needed to claim my BikePro bag at Dulles and recheck it with Austrian Air.

While going through check-in at Geo. Bush Intercontinental, I saw 2 other bike bags being checked in. One was a BikePro. Neither was as big or long as mine. It seems that flying a bike is becoming more common. In the past, when I have flown, my bike has been the only one around.

In-Flight to IAD...

I re-discovered the card that Becky had given me before I left. Her instructions were not to open it until after I left Houston. I had stashed it in my carry-on backpack. When I read it, a tear formed in the corner of my eye. How can I discard it? Inside it read:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the Sun smile on your face.
May the rain fall soft upon your fields.
And, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
— Irish Blessing

To this she added,

"May the Force be with you."
